Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on the 24th of August 1972 within Long Beach California. DuVernay lived with her Aunt Denise she urged DuVernay to be creative and inspired by art. The aunt was on the night shift as a nurse, so she could follow her passion for art literature and theater throughout the day. DuVernay was brought to the movie West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay discovered through her example the power of art as a vehicle for activism. Similar to DuVernay's mom, she was conscious of social issues and taught her to say something through the arts. While DuVernay spent her childhood in Compton with her family, she was a summer resident in Lowndes County Alabama where her dad's family was a part of the same for several generations. DuVernay's father recalled watching the iconic civil rights demonstration on the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the adjacent community of Selma Alabama. DuVernay's time in Alabama's Selma was the inspiration she used to make a film about Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King Jr. In 1990 DuVernay completed her studies at Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. DuVernay enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles upon graduation. There she earned degrees in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay began to produce for the broadcast industry while she was still in university. She started as an intern at CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being given the task of watching the home and looking through the garbage of one of jurors. The jury member was unhappy with the journalism assignments she was assigned and chose to switch over to the business of public relations. DuVernay got her first job as a publicist in an unassuming production studio after graduating from college. In 1999, she founded her own private company for public relations, dubbed The DuVernay Agency. Her company launched a range of promotion and lifestyle networks such as Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
